The Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre (JNARDDC) and Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI), is focusing on responsible e-waste management, resource recovery, and promotion of a circular economy through its strengthened E-Waste Collection Campaign under Special Campaign 6. Over 44 office locations across the country have been finalised for the campaign, with Maharashtra alone hosting more than 28 e-waste collection locations.
The Ministry of Mines, Government of India, is intensifying its E-Waste Collection Campaign under Special Campaign 6. The coordination and implementation of the campaign are being spearheaded by JNARDDC, Nagpur, designated as the Nodal Agency for this initiative, in collaboration with MRAI. This endeavor encompasses collection and awareness activities at multiple locations by offices and organizations associated with the Ministry of Mines.
The widespread participation of offices and organisations reflects the coordinated efforts being undertaken to promote responsible collection and disposal of e-waste. More than 44 office locations across the country have been finalised for the campaign, with Maharashtra alone hosting over 28 locations for e-waste collection. The Ministry's New Delhi office is also one of the identified collection points.
E-waste collected at various participating locations will be directed towards responsible recycling and resource recovery through suitable mechanisms. It is essential to note that e-waste serves as more than just waste but also a potential reservoir of valuable secondary resources, given that many electronic products contain critical minerals and metals essential for modern technologies.
As part of the preparatory activities for effective implementation of the campaign, JNARDDC has conducted virtual coordination meetings with designated Nodal Officers of various offices and organisations under the Ministry of Mines. These include the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL) and Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL).
The Ministry and its field offices and organisations are also undertaking awareness activities, campaigns, and competitions to encourage greater participation among employees and stakeholders. These activities aim to promote awareness about responsible e-waste disposal and encourage reuse, repurposing, and recycling of discarded electronic and electrical products wherever feasible.
