Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed concerns over potential weaponization of food security at the G20 meeting, while also reviewing progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
India has raised concerns about the possible weaponisation of food security measures during a G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, US. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that it is essential to maintain food as a source of security, stability, and cooperation. During the meeting, Goyal also discussed progress towards the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement.
In addition to the trade talks, Goyal held discussions with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting. The two parties shared views on various topics such as the India-EU Trade and Technology Council, reform of the World Trade Organisation, and mutual priorities within the G20.
The negotiations for the India-EU trade pact were successfully completed on January 27 this year, marking an end to talks that had been ongoing since 2007 and resumed in 2022. The European Commission later submitted the agreement to the EU Council for authorization for signature and conclusion.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada has stated that the pact would offer increased opportunities for trade and investment. Additionally, he highlighted that technology transfers, local manufacturing, and artificial intelligence would support India’s next phase of industrial growth.
