Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, activist Yogendra Yadav and others were detained during a second consecutive day of protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
On Saturday, protesters including Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, activist Yogendra Yadav, and All India Students’ Association chief Neha Bora, were detained at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. This was the second consecutive day that demonstrations were held at the site, demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protesters have raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. On Friday, nearly 700 protesters, including Aam Aadmi Party leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha, and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, were detained from the same location. All persons detained on Friday were reportedly released later in the day.
The police have stated that no permission has been granted for any demonstration and that orders prohibiting a gathering of five or more persons under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure remain in force in the New Delhi district. The authorities had also suspended internet services in areas around Jantar Mantar, barricaded the main protest area, and closed the entry and exit at 12 Delhi Metro stations including Lok Kalyan Marg near the prime minister’s residence, Rajiv Chowk in Connaught Place, and Patel Chowk and Janpath near the protest site.
