The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replaced eight of its current Rajya Sabha members for the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh. Notably, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is not included on the party's list.
According to recent reports, the BJP has decided to drop Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and seven other Rajya Sabha MPs from its list of candidates for the elections scheduled on October 16 in Uttar Pradesh. The party currently holds eight out of ten seats, with the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party holding one each.
The BJP has nominated two women candidates: former Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Gangwar, the daughter of Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar. The other seven nominees are Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan.
It is important to note that Puri is also not on the party's list of candidates for one Rajya Sabha seat each in Uttarakhand and West Bengal. His term as a Rajya Sabha member ends on November 25, and he currently does not hold a position in the Lok Sabha.
The elections in Uttar Pradesh are significant given that they precede the upcoming Assembly polls, which are expected to take place in February or March.
