The Gujarat government has proposed to give a disputed plot of land to former Lok Sabha MP Yusuf Pathan and offer the remaining portion at a concessional rate.
Months after former cricketer and Lok Sabha MP Yusuf Pathan broke away from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress, the Gujarat government has proposed to 'gift' him 500 square metres of a long-disputed municipal plot in Vadodara and offer the remaining portion at a concessional rate, PTI reported. The proposal, submitted by the Vadodara municipal commissioner, will be placed before the standing committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled civic body for final approval on Friday. This proposal comes less than two months after Pathan withdrew his petition from the Gujarat High Court concerning the disputed land. The proposal to allot the 978-square-metre plot of land was initially made by Pathan in 2012, citing security concerns because of its proximity to his family home in Vadodara’s Tandalja locality. However, the Gujarat government rejected the proposal in 2014. Despite this rejection, Pathan continued to occupy the plot until he received an eviction notice in 2024, two days after his election to the Lok Sabha from West Bengal’s Baharampur constituency on a TMC ticket. In 2025, the Gujarat High Court dismissed his petition concerning the land and described him as an ‘encroacher’. A division bench of the court subsequently refused to grant him relief and verbally warned that he could face damages for occupying public land without allotment. Pathan withdrew his petition in August this year.
