Two Congress Members of Parliament were booked for trespassing into the Jamia Millia Islamia campus amid student protests. The university has filed a complaint against them, accusing the MPs of inciting unrest during their visit. This article provides additional details on the university's response to the protests and disciplinary actions taken.
According to PTI, the university filed a complaint against Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood and Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi for trespassing into the Jamia Millia Islamia campus during a student protest on Friday. The complaint accuses the MPs of inciting unrest during their visit to the campus. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, the university’s registrar, alleged that Masood jumped a wall to enter the premises, while Pratapgarhi broke a lock, as reported by The Times of India.
The student protests demanding elections to the students’ union have been ongoing since October 12, with five students going on hunger strike. The university has not held student union elections since 2006.
On Sunday night, the university announced that the protest would be discontinued following a ‘mutual understanding’ between the administration and the protesting students. However, the protesting students have yet to issue a statement confirming that the protest has been called off.
Under the agreement, the university agreed to hold student union elections within 15 days of the approval of the students’ union constitution. The university also agreed to revoke the suspensions and show-cause notices issued during the protest. A committee will be formed to investigate the actions of security personnel during the agitation.
The university took disciplinary action against students during the protest. On October 16, it rusticated one of the students, suspended two others and barred all three from entering the campus for a year.
On Saturday, the university shifted all classes online until further notice, following allegations that the administration had ‘attacked’ students who had been on hunger strike and tried to dismantle the protest site. On Sunday, students from at least three hostels at the university alleged that they had been asked to vacate their rooms without an official communication.
