The Andhra Pradesh government is deploying emergency resources and securing vulnerable areas in response to a cyclonic storm approaching the coast.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts under an Orange Alert as a Deep Depression over the East Central and Southeast Bay of Bengal intensifies. According to the IMD, the system is moving west-northwestward at 15 kmph and was last located roughly 730 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 990 km east of Bapatla. It was strengthened into a cyclonic storm during early hours and is expected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by tomorrow, peaking as a very severe cyclonic storm as it nears the West Central Bay of Bengal. The Andhra Pradesh state government is actively coordinating across all departments to deploy emergency resources and prevent loss of life and property. Landfall is expected by the forenoon of October 28, crossing the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam with destructive sustained wind speeds of 115-125 kmph, gusting up to 140 kmph. In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, the IMD has warned of widespread heavy rainfall over the next two days and has urged the public to remain on high alert. Residents are strongly advised to postpone any travel plans, while fishermen have been strictly ordered not to venture into the sea.
