The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts as a cyclonic storm intensifies. The state government is mobilizing emergency resources to secure vulnerable areas and prevent loss of life and property.
According to the IMD, a Deep Depression over the East Central and Southeast Bay of Bengal is rapidly intensifying into a major storm system. On October 27, the system was strengthened into a cyclonic storm, expected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28, and further peak as a very severe cyclonic storm as it nears the West Central Bay of Bengal. The system is currently moving west-northwestward at 15 kmph, approximately 730 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 990 km east of Bapatla.
To counter the threat, the Andhra Pradesh state government is actively coordinating across all departments to deploy emergency resources. The IMD has also warned of widespread heavy rainfall over the next two days and has urged the public to remain on high alert. In response, residents are strongly advised to postpone any travel plans, while fishermen have been strictly ordered not to venture into the sea.
According to the IMD's forecast, landfall is expected by the forenoon of October 28, crossing the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Destructive sustained wind speeds of 115-125 kmph are anticipated, gusting up to 140 kmph.
