Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India's Congress party, has accused the Union government of favoring certain businesses and questioned a meeting between Tata Trusts and Tata Sons at Amit Shah's residence.
On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India's opposition Congress party, took to social media to criticize the Union government for allegedly favoring certain businesses, known as 'cronies'. In a series of posts, Gandhi accused the government of 'criminally destroying' the Tata Group, the largest Indian conglomerate. He stated that no business leader had spoken out against this and questioned how long they would stay silent. Gandhi also expressed his concern about the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as the executive chairman of Tata Sons and the proposed listing of the holding company on the stock market.
Gandhi's comments came amid a dispute within the leadership of Tata Sons, which is the holding entity of the conglomerate’s companies. It was not clear what Gandhi was referring to, but he accused the Union government of not treating all businesses equally and of favoring only a few 'cronies'.
In response to Gandhi's allegations, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged him to refrain from 'politicising every issue' and said that 'casually labelling commercial and legal matters as criminal' was unacceptable. Sitharaman also accused Gandhi of repeatedly decrying the successes of the Indian industry and questioned whether he was trying to incite business leaders to join him in spreading distrust and toxicity.
Sitharaman further stated that the Constitution of India ensures justice to all citizens and that the courts are entrusted with upholding it. She also said that it was essential to 'engage constructively rather than casting baseless aspersions to suit your narrow political motives'.
Responding to Sitharaman’s remarks, Gandhi asked 'which “legal and commercial matter” required Tata Trusts and Tata Sons to be hosted at Amit Shah's residence?' He also questioned when the first 'crony' would appear and which pieces of Tata he would receive.
