The Election Commission has extended the deadlines for filing claims and objections in the voter roll revision process across multiple states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Nagaland, and has postponed the date of publication of final voter lists.
The Election Commission (EC) has announced extensions to the deadlines for filing claims and objections as well as the processing periods in seven states and a Union Territory, following a Supreme Court directive. The extension applies to Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Nagaland, and the Union Territory of Delhi.
The EC's decision comes after the Supreme Court, during a hearing on a petition regarding voter roll revision in Delhi, urged the commission to consider extending the October 30 deadline for filing claims and objections. The new deadline is set for November 25 in all the mentioned states except Maharashtra where it is November 13.
The EC has also postponed the date of publication of the final voter lists in these seven states and Delhi. The new dates are November 30 for Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Nagaland, December 22 for Delhi, and December 15 for Delhi (for disposal of claims and objections).
The extensions were also granted due to requests from state poll panels.
In Maharashtra, the initial deadline for filing claims and objections was October 26. This has been extended till November 13, while the window for disposing of the claims will close on November 25 instead of November 10.
More than two crore names were removed from Maharashtra’s draft voter list in August during the electoral rolls revision. This accounts for 21.1% of the state’s previous voter base.
In Delhi, 47.7 lakh names were deleted from the draft voter list. The names account for 33% of the Union Territory’s electorate.
The window for disposing the claims and objections has been extended till November 20 in Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, November 25 in Nagaland and November 26 in Telangana.
