The Delhi Government has initiated a compensation scheme for families of prisoners who die an unnatural death in custody within prisons of the National Capital Region, providing relief up to 7.5 lakh rupees.
The Delhi Government, following guidelines from the National Human Rights Commission, has announced a scheme to provide compensation to the next of kin or legal heirs of prisoners who die an unnatural death while in custody within the prisons of the National Capital Region.
Under this scheme, compensation of up to 7.5 lakh rupees will be awarded depending on the specific circumstances. Cases involving negligence by prison officials or staff, medical or paramedical personnel, and prisoner suicide are eligible for a compensation of 5 lakh rupees.
The Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, stated that this scheme aims to not only provide timely relief to the affected families under specified circumstances but also strengthen administrative accountability, transparency, and human dignity within prison administration. This will further reinforce adherence to the rule of law within the prison system.
According to the notification, this scheme applies only to cases involving the unnatural death of a prisoner in any Delhi prison occurring on or after the date of its notification.
