In a heated exchange in the Rajya Sabha, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused BJP workers of performing a ritual to ‘purify’ the ground where he spoke at a rally on August 8 in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. The purification was reportedly carried out by a group named Shri Ram Sena, according to various news sources. Kharge stated that this act of 'untouchability' was unacceptable in a democracy and demanded the arrest of those responsible. Union minister JP Nadda responded, saying the BJP does not endorse such activities and would investigate the incident.
In a separate development, Congress Uttarakhand unit chief Ganesh Godiyal condemned the purification ritual as 'extremely hurtful' and 'representative of caste-based discrimination'. He urged the police to take cognisance of the matter and ensure action against those found guilty.
On social media, BJP leader Khajan Das claimed that the Congress was resorting to caste-based politics and attempting to divide the Sanatan community. Congress leader KC Venugopal described the incident as 'shocking' and 'showing the BJP’s anti-Dalit character'.
