The NHRC has taken cognizance of allegations against Bhagwant Mann's wife and issued a notice to the Punjab government, directing them to probe the matter.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), led by its member Priyank Kanoongo, has initiated an inquiry into the allegations that the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanded five crore rupees to allegedly suppress a rape case. The NHRC has directed the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to investigate these allegations and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within a two-week timeframe.
The notice, issued under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, also forwarded the matter to the Women Safety Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The complaint was filed by the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO).
If proven, these allegations could potentially impact the reputation of the Chief Minister and the state government.
