Centre Rejects Request for Grace Marks for CBSE Class 12 Students Claiming Evaluation Errors

The Union government has informed the Supreme Court that it cannot grant grace marks to students who allege evaluation errors in the Central Board of Secondary Education's On-Screen Marking system and have requested re-evaluation.

In a hearing before the Supreme Court on Friday, the Union government, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, stated that it could not award grace marks to students who claimed evaluation errors in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) On-Screen Marking system for Class 12 examinations. The decision was made after a one-week window for re-evaluation was provided and approximately 1.68 lakh students applied for score adjustments. However, Mehta clarified that granting grace marks to these students was not feasible.

During the hearing, advocate Laxmikant Matadan Shukla, representing petitioner Rakesh Binjola, argued that the one-week duration for re-evaluation was insufficient given the large number of students requiring review. According to The Hindu, some students who experienced evaluation errors went on to clear entrance examinations but were now stuck due to failing to meet the minimum qualifying marks in the Class 12 examination.

Mehta maintained that while the Centre did not consider the litigation to be an adversarial one, the petitioners appeared to have missed the chance when the one-week window for re-evaluation was open. The Supreme Court has asked the Union government to file an affidavit giving details about remedial measures taken after irregularities were found in the On-Screen Marking process. It also instructed the petitioner to file a rejoinder listing out cases where candidates seeking re-evaluation could not access the portal due to infrastructural inadequacies, as reported by The Hindu.
