Rajnath Singh underscores the need for self-sufficiency in warship, offshore vessel production, and related fields; stresses good-quality maintenance services to make India a future shipbuilding hub. GRSE is building a cargo ship for Germany.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of self-reliance in producing warships, offshore vessels, and other related fields during a Bhumi Pujan ceremony for five projects of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited (YIL) in Kolkata. The total value of these projects is approximately 3400 crore rupees. Mr Singh described self-reliance as essential for the security of the country. He also emphasized the need for top-quality maintenance services to establish India as a future shipbuilding powerhouse.

The Minister stated that GRSE could lead in future ship building. He clarified that GRSE is currently constructing a cargo ship for Germany. Highlighting the significance of relying on indigenous defence products, Mr Singh noted that the armed forces are now exhibiting increased interest in the products manufactured by India’s defence public sector undertakings.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was present during the ceremony. The minister asserted that a growing void in the global shipbuilding sector can be filled by India under the ‘Make in India’ campaign. To achieve a Viksit Bharat by 2047, the contribution of GRSE and Yantra India Limited would be significant.

Mr Singh praised the efforts of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for the state government’s cooperation to attain the goal of Vikshit Bharat by 2047. He urged attention to be paid to quality assurance and timely delivery of defence products for exports worldwide.

The minister also expressed that the armed forces are now relying on indigenous products for their defence needs.
