The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) announced on Monday that it will conduct a peaceful protest march from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters on September 5. The National Working Committee of the party expressed serious concerns over whether the Government of India intends to honor its commitments made to the youth protesters following the July demonstrations.
The protests were initially sparked on June 6, when the CJP held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union education minister at the time. On July 20, thousands joined the protest, which came two days after the police forcibly hospitalized activist Sonam Wangchuk who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks.
Following the protests and subsequent resignation of Pradhan as the education minister on July 25, the political campaign called off the protests, stating that the government had accepted all its demands, including an assurance that 'no punitive action would be taken against any protester, either now or in the future' in any state ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party or its National Democratic Alliance. The campaign also demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family of each aspirant of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test who died by suicide.
However, on Monday, the CJP’s national working committee met to review whether the government and the states ruled by the BJP and the NDA had complied with the 'solemn commitments made to the youth people of this country'. The political campaign expressed doubts over the government's intention to honor its word, stating that instead of implementing what was promised, the government has been playing delay games, hiding behind technicalities, and avoiding giving clear commitments even before the Supreme Court.
