Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated the Patradevi Martyrs’ Memorial in Goa, a structure meant to symbolize national unity, courage, and sacrifice that contributed to the region's liberation. During his speech at the inauguration event, Mr. Singh emphasized the significance of this memorial by stating that people from different parts of India came to Goa and sacrificed their lives for its freedom. He specifically recalled the bravery of satyagrahis such as Sahodara Devi, Karnail Singh Benipal, Madhukar Damodar Chaudhary, and others who participated in the 1955 Satyagraha. The minister encouraged future generations to learn from these freedom fighters' sacrifices, stating that the memorial should inspire them to understand the price paid for freedom and uphold national unity and integrity. Mr. Singh also pointed out that the Patradevi Satyagraha demonstrated Goa’s liberation was not merely a regional struggle but an expression of national consciousness. He acknowledged the role of the armed forces in Operation Vijay, which led to Goa's liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant congratulated Mr. Singh and the Goa Government for establishing the memorial, describing it as a living symbol of sacrifice reminding future generations of Goa’s freedom fighters' courage and patriotism.
