The Indian Navy has received a new Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) from Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Kattupalli. The vessel is engineered for multiple missions, including maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and support for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations.
On August 27, 2026, the Indian Navy received its first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) from Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Kattupalli. The vessel was delivered with over 75 percent indigenous content and has been conceived as a versatile trial and evaluation platform. It is designed to perform various tasks such as maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and support for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations when needed.
The ship has been aptly named INS Maitri, signifying its intended role as a dependable enabler of multiple missions. True to its designation, the MPV is not limited to one specific task but is engineered to support a wide spectrum of activities, thereby embodying the concept of a multi-purpose vessel.
This delivery marks yet another milestone in the Indian Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding journey and reaffirms the government's vision of fostering a self-sustaining domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
