This article provides details about the examination of allegations made by a Supreme Court judge against the Acting Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court, Sanjeev Prakash Sharma.

On Wednesday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant stated that the allegations made by Supreme Court Judge Sandeep Mehta against Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, are being examined at an 'appropriate level'. According to Live Law, Mehta had alleged in letters to CJI Kant earlier this month that Sharma manipulated case listings to favour rich litigants and used his position to appoint individuals close to him in administrative posts. The allegations included a request for the acting chief justice to be replaced 'with immediate effect'.

In response to Mehta's complaint, Kant said that Sharma must be given an opportunity to respond, as reported by Bar and Bench. Kant further stated that the contents of the letters cannot be adjudicated in the public domain and that the concerned judge must be given a fair opportunity to place his response before any conclusion is reached.

The source material also reveals that Sharma was appointed as a Rajasthan High Court judge in November 2016, transferred to the Patna High Court in 2022, and later became the acting chief justice of the Rajasthan High Court. After Sharma sought to return to Rajasthan on health grounds, the collegium headed by DY Chandrachud, the chief justice at the time, declined his request in March 2023. Sharma was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court instead.

In May 2025, a fresh collegium recommended his return to Rajasthan. Mehta, who was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Rajasthan High Court, claimed that several judges of the Rajasthan High Court had approached him during his visits to the state and expressed concerns about Sharma’s conduct.

Mehta also highlighted a complaint by an advocate addressed to Justice Vikram Nath and copied to him and 15 others, which alleged that Sharma had used his position as acting chief justice to secure permanent appointments to Lok Adalats in Jaipur and Ajmer for persons close to him. These included a childhood friend and the spouses of two district judges.
