The death toll from a flash flood and mudslide in Nepal and China has risen to 552, according to reports. On the Chinese side of the border, five deaths have been reported, while 547 deaths were recorded on the Nepali side.
More than 1,400 people are currently missing, and rescue operations have been halted due to the risk of renewed flooding caused by the bursting of a debris dam. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has reported that 320 Indians in Nepal are not contactable based on preliminary information.
Elsewhere in India, Trinamool Congress leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien have been booked for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing them from discharging their duties. The incident occurred when the leaders attempted to remove a signboard of the party from a building on Kolkata’s Camac Street. Three first information reports have been registered in connection with the incident, and at least 13 persons have been arrested so far.
In other news, Penguin Random House India has denied a report that it decided not to publish Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s memoir Belonging: A Journey of Love in India after she rejected certain ‘editorial changes and deletions.’ The publisher maintains that it is not the publisher of the book and that it was incorrect to claim that it decided not to publish the book because Sonia Gandhi declined to make editorial changes.
