The US Ambassador to India announced that India intends to purchase Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems. The potential deal comes amidst increasing defence ties between India and the United States.
In a significant move, the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, announced on Friday that India plans to acquire Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems from the United States. This purchase is considered a great step forward in the US-India defence relationship and could open up opportunities for co-production.
In a post on social media, Gor emphasized the high level of engagement between the two nations. He further wrote that the Javelin deal is indicative of the deepening defence relations between India and the US.
The Javelin, a portable anti-tank missile system that utilizes a 'fire-and-forget' system, allows it to track and hit its target without further guidance from the operator. This weapons system is used by the US military, NATO partners, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and other countries.
The potential Javelin deal comes amidst increasing defence ties between India and the United States. In October 2021, India and the US signed a 10-year framework for ‘major defence partnership’. The US had designated India as its 'major defence partner' in 2016, and in 2018, India was elevated to tier one of the Strategic Trade Authorisation, which allows New Delhi to receive license-free access to a range of US military and dual-use technologies.
