The Indian women’s hockey team made a historic achievement at the ongoing FIH World Cup, securing a fifth-place finish against higher-ranked Germany on Tuesday in Amstelveen, Netherlands. This marks the best performance by the team since the inaugural edition in 1974 where they finished fourth.
The current squad consisted of 11 World Cup debutants, adding to the significance of this achievement. Ishika opened scoring for India in the 43rd minute, and Navneet Kaur followed with two quick goals in the 44th and 47th minutes, securing a comfortable lead.
Germany's Lynn Krings scored a consolation goal in the 59th minute. The Indian team lost only one match during the tournament, going down 0-2 to hosts and Olympic champions the Netherlands. They also drew with China and England and defeated South Africa 6-1.
After being eliminated from the semi-final race following a goalless draw against Australia, India bounced back strongly against Germany. Despite a slow start, India scored three goals in four minutes and defended firmly against Germany’s attacks.
The performance will give the team a major confidence boost ahead of next month's Asian Games in Japan.
