The Union government has requested the Supreme Court to quash all first information reports (FIRs) related to youth protests in Delhi in July, while also seeking permission for the Delhi Police to register a fresh FIR against individuals with serious criminal records.

On Monday, the Union government moved the Supreme Court with an application to quash all first information reports (FIRs) filed in connection with the youth protests that took place in Delhi in July. The application was made under Article 142 of the Constitution, which empowers the Supreme Court to pass orders necessary for 'complete justice' in any matter before it. The government specifically requested the court to quash 13 FIRs registered for offences including rioting, attempt to murder, robbery, and damage to public property. Alongside this, the application also sought permission for the Delhi Police to register a fresh FIR against 2,873 individuals with serious criminal records who were present at the protest site. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta mentioned the matter before Chief Justice Surya Kant and requested an urgent listing for Tuesday.

The government assured the court that no new FIR will be filed in connection with the incidents mentioned in the application, and if any such FIR is filed later, the authorities will not oppose its quashing. This move by the government could potentially impact the legal proceedings against those involved in the youth protests, which were related to alleged mismanagement of several competitive examinations.

It is important to note that this development comes ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s call for a peaceful march from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters on Saturday. The political campaign had spearheaded the protests against alleged mismanagement of several competitive examinations, and previously called off its protest at Jantar Mantar on July 25 after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned.
