The Supreme Court has ordered the withdrawal of all first information reports (FIRs) registered in connection with student protests held between July 20 and July 25. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has withdrawn its call for a march on September 5 following this order.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has withdrawn its call for a march on September 5 after the Supreme Court ordered that all first information reports (FIRs) registered in India in connection with student protests held between July 20 and July 25 should not be pursued or investigated, as reported by Live Law. This decision came following an application moved by the Union government to the Supreme Court seeking to withdraw all FIRs filed in connection with the youth protests in Delhi. The application urged the court to quash the 13 FIRs registered for offences including rioting, attempt to murder, robbery and damage to public property, using its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.

On Tuesday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that the Union government was also committed to providing compensation to the families of those who died by suicide after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for admission to undergraduate medical courses was cancelled. He added that the government needed three months ‘to work out the modalities’.

Das said that the campaign ‘deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march’ in view of the assurances and the order passed by the Supreme Court. The political campaign had announced the march on August 24, alleging that the Union government had failed to ‘honour its July 25 commitments’ that led the campaign to call off its protest at Jantar Mantar.

Following this decision by the Supreme Court, the governments in Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra have also moved the court seeking to quash 116 FIRs registered in connection with the youth protests, reported Live Law. While Bihar moved to quash 69 FIRs, Maharashtra placed before the court 34 cases to be quashed. West Bengal sought to cancel eight FIRs and Assam listed five cases.
