The Delhi government has issued guidelines to ensure operational panic buttons, clear windows, and authorized parking for public buses after a minor was raped on a moving sleeper bus.
In response to a recent rape case involving a minor on a moving sleeper bus, the Delhi government has taken decisive action to enhance safety measures for women passengers in public transport. The directives come days after a driver and conductor were arrested for raping a 17-year-old girl during a 47 km journey from Greater Noida to Old Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on August 4. According to reports by PTI, the government has mandated that panic buttons must be functioning at all times, with no curtains or films obstructing vehicle windows, and vehicle tracking devices should remain operational.
Additionally, operators have been instructed that stopping at unsafe or unauthorized locations, particularly in the middle of the road or at intersections, is strictly prohibited. All bus drivers must possess valid driving licenses and wear uniforms while operating vehicles. If incidents of harassment are reported, operators must inform police and take the vehicle to the nearest police station or post. Buses can only be parked during night and idle hours in authorized, secure, and adequately lit locations.
