India has made a significant stride in its defense relations with Belgium, as the Indian government has announced the appointment of a Defense Attache to Brussels. This decision comes following Belgium's placement of a Defense Attache in New Delhi earlier this year. According to Secretary (West) in External Affairs Ministry, Sibi George, who briefed media on Belgian Prime Minister, Bart De Wever’s visit, substantial progress will be seen in defense engagement between the two nations, including in defense production. He also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Belgian Prime Minister have set a target to double bilateral trade in the next five years, given the successful conclusion of India-EU FTA. Currently, the trade stands at approximately 13 billion US dollars.
In addition to defense and trade, George emphasised a focus on three Ts – Trade, Technology, and Talent. Prime Minister Modi has invited Belgian universities and premier academic institutions to open campuses in India. Moreover, Belgium has been invited to participate in the WAVES 2.0.
Regarding international conflicts such as Russia-Ukraine and West Asia, both leaders exchanged views on major international developments, including the recent developments in Ukraine and West Asia. Both sides reaffirmed support for efforts towards a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy in Ukraine. On West Asia, they discussed the recent developments in the region and underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomatic engagement to address challenges in a peaceful manner.
