Defence Minister Rajnath Singh embarked on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka yesterday, with the aim of reinforcing bilateral defence and maritime collaboration. Upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, Mr Singh was greeted warmly by Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha.
According to a social media post from the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Minister received a traditional welcome that underscores the longstanding and close relationship between India and Sri Lanka. During his stay, Mr Singh will engage in discussions with the Sri Lankan leadership on multiple matters to bolster ties, particularly in the areas of strong maritime and defence cooperation.
Mr Singh is accompanied by a high-level delegation consisting of senior officials from both the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of External Affairs. In addition to meetings, he will also interact with the Indian diaspora in Colombo during his visit.
Prior to his departure, Mr Singh expressed optimism about his upcoming engagements with Sri Lankan leadership, describing Sri Lanka as an essential partner under India's Neighbourhood First and MAHASAGAR policy.
