Former Indian Administrative Services officer Devashish Sharma, who was appointed deputy commissioner of Nagaon in June 2025 and later served as deputy commissioner of neighboring Morigaon district, has been named the BJP's candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election on October 6. The Congress has raised concerns about Sharma's actions during his tenure as deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer and asked the Election Commission to review and scrutinize them.
On Friday, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced former Indian Administrative Services officer Devashish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-poll in Assam, scheduled for October 6. The Indian Express reported that Sharma took voluntary retirement last week and joined the BJP on Thursday. A 2011-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Sharma had been appointed deputy commissioner of Nagaon in June 2025, according to The Indian Express. Before assuming his role in Nagaon, Sharma served as deputy commissioner of Morigaon district, which is also part of the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency.
The Congress has expressed concerns about Sharma's actions during his tenure as deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer and has asked the Election Commission to ‘review and scrutinize’ them. Congress MP Rakibul Hussain wrote to the poll body, raising questions about Sharma's responsibilities for electronic voting machines, polling arrangements, staff deployment, and implementing Election Commission directives among other key aspects of the polls in the constituency.
