The Indian women's cricket team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan's Mohsin Naqvi, citing a decision made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The refusal followed a delay in the trophy presentation due to financial matters.
On Sunday, the Indian women's cricket team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan's interior minister and head of the country's cricket board. The refusal followed a delay in the trophy presentation for nearly 50 minutes, with Cricinfo reporting that the Sri Lankan squad received their runners-up cheque from Naqvi before receiving their medals from the Sri Lankan board's interim chief Eran Wikramaratne.
According to The Indian Express, the BCCI had informed the Asian Cricket Council in advance of the team's intention not to accept the trophy from Naqvi due to a decision made by the Board. At a press conference, Indian coach Amol Muzumdar explained the team’s decision, stating that for them, the tournament was officially over and they were happy to be recognized as champions.
'For us, this tournament is over, we are the champions…that’s good for us,' he told reporters. 'It was on the big board that India are the champions of Asia Cup 2026. This tournament is officially over for us. We’re happy that we’re the champions and we look forward to the Asian Games.'
A similar incident occurred in September 2025 when the Indian men’s team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi amid tensions between India and Pakistan following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor.
