A 21-year-old man, Shivanjay Rajput, and another accused, Ravi Lakhera, were arrested after gunfights with the police in relation to a spurious liquor case that resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals in Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh.
On September 5, the first deaths due to spurious liquor poisoning were reported in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. The authorities launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of Shivanjay Rajput on Sunday following a gunfight near Kathua Nala forest area.
According to unidentified police officials from PTI, Rajput allegedly fired three rounds at a police team during the search operation. In retaliation, security personnel reportedly opened fire, injuring Rajput in the leg. He was subsequently hospitalized and is currently stable. Sagar police control room in-charge Sub-Inspector RKS Chauhan confirmed this information to PTI.
Rajput carried a bounty of Rs 30,000 and was found with a country-made .315-bore pistol, three live cartridges, three empty cartridges, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle. The police had previously registered five first information reports and arrested 19 individuals in the case.
Another accused, Ravi Lakhera, was arrested after an alleged gunfight on Friday. Hiding in a forest near Barayatha village close to the Uttar Pradesh border, he reportedly opened fire at the police team searching for him. The authorities claimed that they retaliated, injuring Lakhera's leg.
The Hindu reports that Lakhera is a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur district and allegedly supplied raw material for the spurious liquor to Chandrabhan Rajpoot, another key accused person who is in police custody.
