Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, an airstrip in Ujjain is being developed into an airport under the RCS-UDAN 5.2 scheme to facilitate smooth movement of devotees and tourists for Simhastha-2028.
The Datana-Matana airstrip in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is being developed into an airport as part of infrastructure development prior to Simhastha-2028. This project falls under the Central Government’s RCS-UDAN 5.2 scheme, with an MoU already signed between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the State Government. Approximately 120 acres of government land have been transferred to the AAI for the development of the airport.
The existing airstrip at Datana-Matana will be equipped with a 1,800-metre runway, with provision for future extension to 2,700 metres. This expansion aims to increase air services to Ujjain and reduce travel time for passengers arriving from different regions.
Simhastha-2028 is expected to attract a large number of devotees and tourists, making the development of the Datana-Matana Airport an important infrastructural component of preparations. Upon completion, air connectivity to Ujjain will be more convenient, offering an additional travel option for visitors during the mega event.
Ujjain, a city known for Baba Mahakal and prominent religious and tourism destination, will benefit from year-round travel opportunities for devotees and tourists visiting from different parts of the country. The airport is also expected to boost economic activity in trade, local transportation, hotels, food services, and other allied sectors.
Madhya Pradesh continues to expand its air infrastructure. In 2023-24, five major airports were operational in the state, including Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Khajuraho. The addition of Rewa, Datia, and Satna in 2024-25 brought the total to eight. A new airport at Shivpuri is in progress, and upon completion of the Datana-Matana Airport, Madhya Pradesh will have its 10th airport.
