The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the licences of four Mumbai restaurants, including Café Mondegar in Colaba, due to various food safety and hygiene violations.
During an inspection on Saturday, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered several food safety violations at Café Mondegar, a renowned eatery located in Mumbai's Colaba district. According to The Indian Express, the FDA found that hot food was not being kept above 60°C, while cold storage was not maintained below 5°C. Additionally, the agency reported improper food thawing and cooked food not being cooled quickly enough at Café Mondegar. Furthermore, damaged and damp floors, poor drainage near the food preparation area that could lead to cross-contamination, and equipment that was not being cleaned and sanitised properly were also identified by the FDA.
Besides Café Mondegar, other establishments in Mumbai whose licences were suspended due to food safety violations include Maharashtra Biryani Center in Kandivali East, Tribhuvan Dairy Farm in Ghatkopar West, and Mahavir Cashew & Foods Pvt Ltd in Ghatkopar East. The FDA stated that these establishments had failed to meet the required hygiene and sanitation standards for handling, preparing, storing, and processing food.
The action was part of the FDA’s ongoing drive against eateries and other establishments for alleged violations of food safety norms during the festive season. In addition, the FDA suspended the licence of Hotel Malhar Wada in Kolhapur's Pune division due to violations, as well as that of Puramchand and Sons in Pune’s Market Yard after finding violations and an expired food product during an inspection.
