The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised hallmarking charges for gold and silver articles, with the fee for gold increased from 45 to 75 rupees per article.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has implemented a revision in the hallmarking charges for gold and silver articles. Effective immediately, the hallmarking fee for gold has been elevated from 45 to 75 rupees per article. In contrast, the charge for silver remains at 35 rupees per article. This alteration coincides with the approaching festive season.
The amendment in charges was notified through the BIS (Hallmarking) Amendment Regulations, 2026, dated 14th of this month. Under the revised Schedule IV, jewellers are now required to pay a hallmarking fee of 75 rupees per gold article, subject to a minimum charge of 200 rupees per consignment. For silver articles, the fee payable by jewellers to recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) remains at 35 rupees per article, with a minimum charge of 150 rupees per consignment.
BIS hallmarking serves to verify the purity of precious metals used in jewellery and certifies the article under the Bureau of Indian Standards. A hallmarked article bears three key markings: the BIS logo, the Karat fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number.
