India's women's and men's chess teams started their campaigns at the 46th World Chess Olympiad with victories over Dominican Republic and Thailand, respectively.
The Indian Women’s Team commenced their campaign at the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 30th, with a resounding 4-0 victory against the Dominican Republic. Koneru Humpy, the top-ranked Indian, set the tone with a win over Franchesca Ramirez Luzon. R Vaishali, Vantika Agrawal, and B Savitha Shri also secured victories against their respective opponents: Miguelina De La Rosa Martinez, Mary Loly Gonzalez Peguero, and Karla Mya Nunez Diaz. This marked the Olympic debut for Savitha Shri.
On the same day, India's men’s team also registered a victory, with world champion D Gukesh, Nihal Sarin, and Vidit Gujrathi earning a 3-1 win over Thailand. Notably, Nihal was the first Indian to secure a victory, defeating Thanadon Kulpruethanon. Gukesh followed suit with an impressive attacking display against Faris Rashid Alriyami, and Vidit completed the win with a comfortable victory over Tupfah Khumnorkaew.
Each team can have five players in its squad, with four featuring in each round.
