Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, representing the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, addressed the Regional Agriculture Conference for Southern States in Hyderabad on 18 SEP 2026. The conference brought together various agricultural stakeholders to discuss key challenges and opportunities facing agriculture in the region. Discussions focused on the impact of El Niño, crop diversification, and measures required for the upcoming Rabi season.

In his address, Shri Chouhan emphasized that the deliberations were not mere discussions but aimed at bringing tangible improvements in farmers’ lives, strengthening India’s food security, expanding employment opportunities through agriculture, and giving fresh momentum to the economy through the farm sector. He highlighted 'Nation First' as the guiding principle of the government, ensuring that the Centre does not approach agricultural issues on the basis of political party affiliations in a state.

Shri Chouhan also discussed the importance of technology in transforming agriculture. While acknowledging technological progress, he noted that agriculture would remain indispensable due to its role in providing fruits, vegetables, and grains. 'Nation First' principle was further reiterated when Shri Chouhan explained that serving farmers is akin to serving God because agriculture is fundamental to human life.

He outlined three key objectives for Indian agriculture: ensuring food security for a population of more than 140 crore, securing farmers’ livelihoods, and nutritional security. Shri Chouhan highlighted the immense potential for horticulture in southern India, particularly in spices, coffee, cashew, cocoa, sandalwood, and other crops.

Regional agriculture conferences were deemed essential for region-specific planning due to the significant diversity in India’s agricultural landscape. Shri Chouhan emphasized that rules should serve people, not become a burden on them. He urged state governments to review outdated Acts and procedures and make changes wherever necessary.

The conference included presentations and discussions on various agricultural issues, followed by interaction with farmers and other stakeholders to seek their suggestions. Best practices from different states were shared to encourage adaptation of successful initiatives.
