PM Narendra Modi celebrates World Rhino Day, acknowledges protection efforts in Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, initiates Project Rhino for species conservation.

On World Rhino Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi celebrated the greater one-horned rhinoceros and recognized the dedication of those working towards its protection. He highlighted that Assam now hosts nearly 80 percent of the global rhino population, with Kaziranga's anti-poaching measures receiving widespread acclaim.

The Prime Minister pointed out that rhinos have either returned or are well protected in parts of Bihar and West Bengal. Moreover, he lauded the successful reintroduction of rhinos in Dudhwa, Uttar Pradesh, as a significant milestone.

Modi stated that these developments demonstrate the sustained commitment of people towards animal protection and active wildlife management in the range states. To further advance species conservation in the country, he announced Project Rhino to provide financial and technical support for protection, habitat management, genetic improvement, and understanding population dynamics in the participating states.

In a tweet on X, Modi shared his sentiments, stating that the return or improved protection of rhinos in various states indicates the sustained commitment of the people towards animal conservation. Project Rhino was initiated to provide necessary support for protecting, managing habitats, enhancing genetics, and understanding population dynamics.

The Prime Minister's post on Twitter read: 'On World Rhino Day, we celebrate the magnificent greater one-horned rhinoceros and laud all those at the forefront of its protection. Assam now holds nearly 80% of the world’s rhino population and Kaziranga’s efforts to end rhino poaching have been extensively appreciated. On one hand, rhinos have either returned or are well protected in parts of Bihar and West Bengal. On the other hand, success of reintroduction of rhinos in Dudhwa (Uttar Pradesh) is creating history. This shows the sustained commitment of our people towards animal protection and active wildlife management in the range states.'
