A waste picker from the Scheduled Tribe community in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, has seen improved financial security and opportunities for his family thanks to an assistance program.
Shri Chevuri Anjaneyulu, a waste picker in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, has seen positive changes in his financial situation due to the Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) component of the NAMASTE scheme. Having supported his wife and two children for seven years, Anjaneyulu began working as a waste picker at a young age, facing social discrimination and limited access to basic amenities and services. Before receiving assistance, his income from waste picking made it difficult to meet household expenses and plan for his children's future. However, on 19 June 2023, he and three other members received support for a group project under SUY through the National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation. With a total project cost of Rs 35 lakh, comprising a loan of Rs 17.5 lakh and an upfront capital subsidy of Rs 17.5 lakh, Anjaneyulu was able to strengthen his livelihood, earning approximately Rs 10,000 more per month through the scheme. This additional income has allowed him to support his children's education at an English-medium private school and work towards better opportunities for them.
