The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spent a substantial amount more than the Congress in the combined Assembly polls held across Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry in 2026.
According to expenditure statements filed with the Election Commission, the BJP spent Rs 286.9 crore on the West Bengal election, exceeding the total spending of Rs 248.5 crore by the Congress in all five Assembly polls.
The BJP's total spending on Assembly elections across four states and one Union Territory amounted to a significant Rs 529.3 crore. Notably, the BJP's expenditure in West Bengal alone accounted for more than half of this total expenditure.
In the West Bengal election, the BJP won 207 seats out of 294, thereby ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress. The Congress, on the other hand, managed to secure only two seats in West Bengal with a spending of Rs 42 crore.
It is important to note that while there are limitations on individual candidate expenditure, parties can spend an unlimited amount on their campaigns. Post each election, parties are mandated to submit detailed accounts of the expenses incurred, which include costs related to travel, rallies, advertisements, and campaign materials.
