The Supreme Court has issued strict orders to the authorities in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, regarding the sealing and demolition of 16,726 unauthorised structures within Zone-A. This action is intended to ensure public safety following a contempt petition concerning non-compliance with previous directives on illegal constructions. The case is being overseen by a bench led by Justices J. B. Pardiwala and K. V. Viswanathan. In addition, the court has established a judicial commission headed by retired Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia to investigate the emergence of illegal residential colonies in Uldepur, with a focus on determining if Meerut Development Authority officials were complicit. The court also requested comprehensive reports on illegal constructions in the city's three other zones. The authorities have been instructed to continue demolition efforts and file status reports before the next hearing, scheduled for December.
