In the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Muslim residents protested against the demolition of a portion of the Shahi Masjid by the Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC). The demolition was part of preparations for the Simhastha religious gathering scheduled for March 2028. On Sunday night, crowds had gathered outside the mosque to protest against the destruction, with some people choosing to spend the night within the mosque. Tensions escalated in the morning when the UMC commenced the operation, leading to violent clashes between protesters and police personnel who responded by firing tear gas. The exact number of injuries sustained during the violence is currently unknown.
Separately, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to decide within four months which of the two Trinamool Congress factions is authorized to use the party's original name and symbol. The factions have been given one month to complete their pleas before the poll body after which the panel will have three months to decide the matter.
On September 17, the Election Commission barred both factions from using the party’s original name and symbol in the October 6 bye-polls. The next day, it allotted new names and symbols to the factions as an interim measure.
