Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other Opposition leaders, were detained after entering Akashvani Bhawan without permission during a sit-in demanding a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
On Tuesday, Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other Opposition leaders, staged a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan, next to the Election Commission headquarters, demanding a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the other election commissioners. The leaders had entered the premises without permission and were booked for the same.
According to PTI, Gandhi said around 300 Opposition MPs wanted to meet the poll panel. The police cleared the protest around 8 pm, and the leaders were detained and released later at night.
Gandhi later said that the authorities were trying to protect 'traitors' of democracy. He posted on social media, 'There will be a reckoning – not a single traitor will be spared.'
The Opposition parties had marched from Parliament towards the Election Commission earlier in the day, but were briefly stopped by the police near Parliament Street due to lack of permission and violating prohibitory orders under Section 144. Around 260 people, including 10 MPs, were detained during the march, according to the Delhi Police.
