The Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas was allegedly assaulted by the police during a protest in Delhi. Representatives of Left-affiliated student groups and the Cockroach Janta Party were also detained in various parts of India.
On Sunday, Neha Bora, the president of the All India Students’ Association, was detained while leading a protest march in Delhi. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas was also detained near Connaught Place, with the party alleging that he was assaulted by the police. According to the CPI(M), Brittas was later dropped by the roadside, visibly injured and in distress.
Representatives of Left-affiliated student groups and the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign were also detained on Sunday. In Mumbai, the Cockroach Janta Party had called for a protest at 4 pm, but demonstrators were not allowed to assemble near Shivaji Park and were being detained at Dadar station itself. Some were detained even for walking in the area.
The police action came after the Cockroach Janta Party and Left groups had called for fresh protests in Delhi on Sunday, a day after thousands of protesters, Opposition leaders, activists, lawyers, and journalists were held across the capital. The demonstrations were organized to demand Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court passed an interim order directing that people peacefully assembling to protest must not be detained ‘except save by law’.
