Protesters in Imphal, Manipur, held a significant demonstration near the governor’s residence and the chief minister’s secretariat, demanding the implementation of NRC, deportation of undocumented migrants, and abrogation of Suspension of Operations agreement.
On Friday, a large-scale protest was staged in Imphal, Manipur, by the Federation of Haomee, a civil society group. The demonstrators marched towards Kangla, the historic political and cultural centre of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom, and clashed with security forces who used tear gas. The protests were against recent killings in Manipur and demanded NRC implementation, deportation of undocumented migrants, and abrogation of Suspension of Operations agreement.
According to reports by PTI, the protesters banged utensils and struck electric poles with hammers, and motorists honked their vehicle horns as part of the demonstrations. In several parts of Imphal, protesters gathered near the governor’s residence and the chief minister’s secretariat. Security personnel stopped several protesters at Palace Compound, Moirangkhom, and Keisampat junctions; however, hundreds managed to reach Kangla's Western Gate.
The police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the protesters who had gathered near the governor’s residence. The protests came four days after three persons from the Meitei community were killed in Kangpokpi district.
On Friday, state Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said that searches were underway to arrest persons involved in the killings, as reported by The New Indian Express. Three persons have been held so far.
The Suspension of Operations agreement was signed between the Centre, the Manipur government and two conglomerates of Kuki militant outfits – the Kuki National Organisation and United Peoples Front – in 2008. Under this agreement, the security forces and the militant groups are prohibited from launching operations. The agreement was renewed in September 2025.
