On Wednesday, two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, as reported by AFP. This unfortunate event took place in the province of Toledo, south of Madrid, where a train operated by state-owned rail company Renfe struck the rear of a stationary train run by private operator Iryo. The Iryo train had halted due to a signal fault, as reported by Reuters. As a result, several carriages on both trains derailed, causing at least 64 fatalities and over 80 injuries, with 50 individuals reportedly in serious condition, according to BBC.
The Renfe train had 397 passengers, while the Iryo train carried 147 passengers, as per regional authorities. Rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia were suspended following the collision.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the accident, stating that emergency services were working diligently to assist those affected and ensure their safety. Spanish King Felipe VI also extended his condolences, support, and affection through the royal household.
This collision marks Spain’s second major railway accident this year, as reported by Reuters. In January, 46 persons were killed when two trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided on the same line.
