Rahul Gandhi accuses the Union government of criminal destruction of Tata Group, and Noel Tata challenges the validity of a resolution passed by the Tata Sons board for procedural irregularities.
On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the Union government of 'criminally destroying' the Tata Group, the largest Indian conglomerate. He made these remarks amidst a dispute within the leadership of Tata Sons, the holding entity of the group's companies.
The corporate dispute mainly revolves around the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as the executive chairman of Tata Sons and the proposed listing of the holding company on the stock market. It was reported that Noel Tata, who heads Tata Trusts, a group of philanthropic entities that holds a 66% stake in Tata Sons, has challenged the validity of a resolution passed by the Tata Sons board on September 17 that reappointed Chandrasekaran as the holding company’s chairperson for five more years. According to ANI, Noel Tata alleged procedural irregularities, stating that the agenda circulated for the board meeting did not specify Chandrasekaran’s reappointment.
In a letter written to the company secretary and the group’s corporate secretary on Monday, Noel Tata also alleged that despite repeated requests, the company had not given him the meeting’s audio and video recordings, final minutes or a certified copy of the resolution. He was quoted as having stated, 'The resolution is void'.
The Tata Trusts have also opposed the listing of Tata Sons on the stock market due to concerns about corporate governance and financial transparency. The company is categorised as an upper-layer non-banking financial company and is viewed as an entity that needs protection from broader economic risks.
