The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced guidelines for verifying candidates selected for direct recruitment to posts in state departments, corporations, councils, and local bodies. The order states that individuals who are members of an organization whose stated objective is to bring about a change in the existing society through violence may be deemed ineligible for appointment under the government.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh has issued an order that may disqualify individuals involved in violent activities aimed at regime change from obtaining state jobs. The Times of India reported that the order lays down guidelines for verifying candidates selected for direct recruitment to posts in various state departments, corporations, councils, and local bodies. According to the order, individuals who are members of an organization whose stated objective is to change the existing system of society through violence will be considered ineligible for appointment under the government.
The order also specifies that participation in such activities within the three years preceding verification, after the individual turns 21, may be considered evidence of their continued involvement. However, this presumption can be reconsidered if there is concrete evidence of a positive change in the person’s conduct during the intervening period.
The government clarified that candidates cannot be declared ineligible solely on the basis of their political ideology. The filing of a first information report or the pendency of an investigation alone will not automatically disqualify an applicant.
The order comes against the backdrop of protests in parts of the state and rest of the country demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the functioning of the Election Commission. In July, youth demonstrations were also held in the country over alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive exams.
