Chief Justice Surya Kant expresses concern over the persistence of digital fraud scams in India, criticizing banks and other agencies for failing to implement adequate safeguards. The court is considering issuing directions to hold banks accountable for losses caused by cyber fraud.

In a recent hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed his frustration at the persistence of digital arrest scams in India despite public awareness campaigns, media coverage, and judicial intervention. The bench also criticised banks and other agencies for failing to put sufficient measures in place to prevent suspicious transactions arising from cyber fraud. According to the court, it is considering directions to hold banks accountable for losses caused by cyber fraud where due diligence has not been exercised.

The government argues that this should be addressed through an appropriate regulatory framework by the central bank. However, Chief Justice Kant questioned why Indians continue to fall prey to digital fraud scams and added, ‘What is wrong with victims?’ He further stated, ‘Are they not normal persons?’

In addition, the court has put a four-week hold on the demolition of a heritage mosque near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in Delhi. The government has stated that the Land and Development Office will consider a representation from the Delhi Waqf Board during this period.

The Bharatiya Janata Party regime in Uttar Pradesh has announced that people involved in violent activities aimed at bringing about a ‘regime change’ may be deemed ineligible for state government jobs. An order stated, ‘Individuals who are members of an organisation whose stated objective is to change the existing system of society through violence will be considered ineligible for appointment under the government.’

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief MK Stalin condemned the brief detention of economist A Kalaiyarasan and demanded an apology from Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. Kalaiyarasan was detained over an allegedly abusive Instagram comment about a TVK MLA made by a fake account purportedly using his photograph.
