The Ministry of Civil Aviation initiates trials for Digi Yatra, a digital platform, at seven airports across India to facilitate international travel. The trials will allow eligible passengers to use the platform at designated touchpoints.
On November 1st, 2026, the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced the commencement of trials for Digi Yatra at seven airports in India. The trial period will last from November to December 2026. This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating digital technology in India’s aviation sector.
Eligible Indian nationals holding e-passports can utilize the Digi Yatra at designated airport touchpoints while traveling on select international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo. The trials are being conducted at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar airports.
During the trial period, eligible passengers can use Digi Yatra at terminal entry points, Security Hold Areas (SHA), and boarding gates where the necessary infrastructure is available.
In order to access the facility, eligible Indian nationals must create an e-passport-based Verifiable Credential (VC) through the Digi Yatra mobile application. The process involves scanning the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) of the e-passport, reading the embedded chip using Near Field Communication (NFC), capturing a selfie, and verifying the details. The credential is stored in the passenger’s Digi Yatra wallet on their device and can be used at airport touchpoints enabled for the trials.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has stated that feedback received during the trial period will inform the planning of a wider rollout in 2027.
It is important to note that the Digi Yatra facility is intended to complement, not replace, existing travel processes. Passengers are still required to carry their travel documents and complete all mandatory airline document checks, immigration procedures, and other applicable travel formalities.
