Medicines at a Jan Aushadhi Kendra

This article delves into quality measures implemented for medicines supplied through Jan Aushadhi Kendras across India, as well as an evaluation of the scheme's impact on rural, remote, and underserved areas.

Under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) scheme, a total of 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been opened across the country till 30.06.2026. Among these, 1631 JAKs are in Tamil Nadu, with 74 in the Kallakurichi Lok Sabha Constituency, including 62 JAKs in Salem and 12 in Kallakurichi district.

To ensure quality of the medicines supplied through JAKs, various mechanisms have been put in place. These include supply only from WHO Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified plants, distribution only after 100% pre-testing of all medicine batches, and testing only at labs compliant with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

The product basket under PMBJP includes 2,110 medicines and 315 surgicals, medical consumables, and devices, covering all major therapeutic groups. Medicines are available at rates that are about 50% to 80% cheaper than branded medicines.

An independent evaluation of PMBJP during FY 2023-24 observed significant improvement in the availability and accessibility of affordable quality generic medicines, particularly in rural, remote, and underserved areas. As on 30.06.2026, 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras are functional across the country.

In order to address any supply gaps and ensure smooth supply and availability of products at JAKs, incentives have been offered for stocking commonly used medicines, an end-to-end information-technology-enabled supply chain system is in place, and regularly monitored fast-moving products are ensured.

The Government aims to open 25,000 JAKs by March 2027. Awareness campaigns about the benefits of Janaushadhi medicines are conducted on a regular basis to promote acceptability and increase sales.
