The Delhi Government today notified the Delhi Slum and Jhuggi Jhopri Relocation and Rehabilitation Policy, 2026. This initiative aims to provide permanent and secure homes to eligible slum-dwelling families. According to the policy, approximately 4 to 5 lakh families living in slum settlements are expected to benefit, impacting around 20 lakh people across the national capital.
Under the new policy, eligible slum dwellers will be prioritized for in-situ rehabilitation and provided with alternative housing at the existing slum settlement site or within a radius of three kilometres. The proposed housing units are 1-BHK with access to basic facilities such as schools, Anganwadi centres, healthcare services, and playgrounds.
The policy also includes special considerations for persons with disabilities, maintenance and security for five years, transparent allotment through a computerised lottery, and a grievance redressal mechanism. It is worth noting that this initiative aims to offer many families who were left out of earlier schemes an opportunity to benefit from the new rehabilitation framework.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the policy's objective is to ensure slum-dwelling families receive not just permanent housing but also dignity, security, and a better quality of life.
